CIMO Scholarship Programmes for Students in Finland

CIMO is an organisation for international mobility and cooperation and mainly focuses on education, working life, culture and young individuals. CIMO offers many scholarship programmes for doctoral studies and research at Finnish Universities. 

Academic Fields: All areas of study (Except advanced level degree courses for Finnish language)

Presently CIMO manages and is responsible for the following scholarship programmes-
  • CIMO Fellowships
  • Finnish Government Scholarship Pool
  • Scholarships for Kindred Peoples
  • Scholarships for Master's level degree students of the Finnish language 
  • Scholarships for post-Master's-level degree students and researchers of the Finnish language 

CIMO Fellowship Programmes

This fellowship programme is for students pursuing doctorate studies at a Finnish University, and researchers from all over the world. This fellowship is offered in all the fields of study. Visiting doctorate students and researchers are who are carrying out their doctorate studies at a foreign university can be eligible for the fellowship if they provide a motivation letter of the hosting Finnish university department.

Eligible Countries: Candidates from all countries are eligible for this programme. Emphasis is on candidates from India, Brazil, Russia, Chile, North America and China. 

Duration: 3 to 12 months

Support Offered: It covers the cost of living in Finland for a single person. An allowance of 1500 euros is given every month. The grant is paid to the concerned university department, which further gives it to the scholarship holder as a personal grant. 

Application Process:
The prerequisite for applying for this fellowship programme is that the visiting researcher must have set contacts with a Finnish host university. If a Finnish university is ready to host you, then the Finnish university department wanting to host you, can apply to CIMO for the grant on your behalf, i.e. the hosting Finnish university act as an "applicant" in the CIMO Fellowship programme.   • A motivation letter: It should be of maximum 1 page
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): It should have details like qualifications- master’s degree is required, any publication, etc.
  • Research plan: It should be of at least 3-5 pages and should include introduction, objective, research methodology, results and possible applications. 
  • Application form (2 printed copies): It must be signed by the candidate.

Dates and Deadlines: Applications for the programmes are accepted at all times. However, it must be submitted at least 5 months before the scholarship period. Decisions regarding the grant of the fellowship are made 3 months after receipt of application.

Finnish Government Scholarship Pool

The Finnish Government provides scholarships for Doctoral level studies and research at Finnish universities/ public research institutes. It is available to young researchers from all academic disciplines. Candidates must be provisionally accepted either as a visiting Doctorate student or researcher, or as a full-time Doctoral degree student. The scholarships are based primarily on cultural agreements or similar agreements between Finland and the following countries: Indian, China, Japan, Mexico, Australia, Israel, Cuba, Namibia, Ukraine, Mongolia, Egypt, Turkey, and Republic of Korea. The citizens of these countries are eligible for the scholarships. 

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must have:
  • Set contact with the Finnish institution before applying 
  • An invitation letter from the academic supervisor in Finland
  • Received a Master’s-level degree before applying
  • Pursued post-Master's level studies as a visiting student; take part in a research project or teach at a university or public research institute in Finland.
Scholarship Duration: 3-9 months
Support Offered: A monthly allowance of EUR 1500 is given for a single person. 
Application Procedure:
Applications for the Finnish Government Scholarship Pool funding must be made to the concerned authority in the candidate’s country. You can download the form from the Study in Finland portal.  The application form can also be taken from the national scholarship authorities or directly from CIMO. Fill in the form and submit the with following documents at the mentioned below address-

Documents to be submitted are-

  • Language Certificate: Can be English, Swedish or Finnish

The scholarship authorities in each country can submit up to 10 candidates applications for the Finnish Government Scholarship Pool.  To know the countries and authorities for the scholarship, click here 

Dates and Deadlines: The application announcement is done in September end every year. After the announcement is made, candidates must contact the concerned authority in their home country to know about the deadline for application submission. The final decision is made in June. 

Scholarships for Kindred Peoples 

This scholarship programme objective is to support and encourage international mobility in research and teaching in areas related to Finno-Ugric linguistics, folklore and ethnology. Also, it aims to make strong the cultural and linguistic ties between the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia and Finland.
The scholarships for kindred peoples are for post-Master's level students and researchers:
  • Who are pursuing post-Master's level studies or research at universities in the Finno-Ugric regions of Russia, 
  • Who are living in Russia and know any of the Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia, 
  • Study Finno-Ugric languages
Scholarship Duration: 12 months

Support Offered: It includes living expenses for one person in Finland. A monthly allowance between 900-1200 Euros is given.

Application Process: The candidates must contact the host University for Scholarship Application.  The hosting Finnish university department should apply to CIMO for the scholarship on behalf of the candidate. Candidates can download the application form from the Study in Finland portal. .

Following documents must be sent by the scholarship candidate to the Finnish host University:
  • Research Plan: 2-3 pages and should have objective, research method and expected results
  • A CV
  • Educational Certificates copies
The host university will send the application form along with documents to CIMO. The decision will be sent back to the candidate’s university. 

Dates and Deadlines: There are two deadlines in a year:
  •   First deadline is on 15 April
  • Second deadline is on 30 September

Scholarships for Master’s Students in Finnish

CIMO awards scholarships to students of Finnish language and culture at universities outside Finland to pursue advanced Master’s studies in Finnish universities or to gather information in Finland for their Master’s thesis in their home university.

Amount: 800 € per month

Scholarship Duration: 1 term

Dates and Deadlines: Candidates can apply for a scholarship two times in a year. The deadlines are
  • For the autumn term- by 30 April 
  • For Spring term- by 31 October 
Decision for autumn term is made in May, while for spring term in November.

Scholarships for Post-Graduates and Researchers in Finnish Language

CIMO offers scholarships to non-Finnish post-graduate pupils and researchers outside Finland who study either Finnish language or culture, or Finno-Ugric languages.
Candidates must possess at least a Master’s degree. Scholarships are awarded for post-graduate studies or research in a Finnish university or for short study visits.

Scholarship Duration: 3 to 12 months

Scholarship Amount: 1,200 –euro- per month is given. 

Application Process:
The candidates must contact the host University for Scholarship Application  .  The hosting university department should apply to CIMO for the scholarship on behalf of the candidate.
Documentation
Following documents must be sent by the scholarship candidate to the Finnish host University:

Short-term Scholarships

Short-term scholarships are also available to post-graduate students or researchers for a period of 1 to 4 weeks. These scholarships are for attending seminars, meeting supervisors, or for interviews. 

Scholarship Amount: 300 € per week

Application Process
The candidate must apply for the scholarship independently at least 2 months before the commencement of the scholarship period. The candidate should clearly mention the purpose of visa and the importance of the studies or research in the application . Along with the application following documents must be submitted:
  • Motivation letter
  • Research plan
  • Reference from the research supervisor
  • CV: It should include educational background details, and details on previos scholarships and visits to Finland.
